OUR PHILOSOPHY Childbirth Kingston is an independent organization promoting and supporting informed decision making through prepared childbirth classes, a childbirth educator training program and a Doula registry. We are committed to: recognizing the woman as the centre of the childbirth experience respecting each woman's unique needs, choices and experiences promoting the full range of childbirth options being responsive to the needs of the community being an independent source of information OUR HISTORY Childbirth Kingston (formerly Kingston Childbirth Education Association) owes its beginning to two women, Mary Curtis and Marion Reid, and a book called The New Childbirth. In 1968 a friend passed Mary a book that explained various breathing patterns in preparation for childbirth. Feeling she had little to lose, Mary set out to teach herself the techniques. When her labour began, her scepticism was soon replaced by pleasant surprise. Mary came away from the birth of her daughter feeling "exhilarated". In early 1969 Marion became pregnant and Mary passed the book along. Marion too was "absolutely astounded" by her ability to deal with contractions. Word spread and Mary and Marion became somewhat well-known. When calls from expectant mothers began to frequent their homes they realised they had information that others wanted and needed. In 1970 they set up a free 6 class course based on The New Childbirth. They taught 13 women in the first year. From this beginning; Childbirth Kingston has grown to what it is today with one staff member, 12 teachers, the Board of Directors and an enthusiastic group of volunteers. In 1998 KCEA changed its name to Childbirth Kingston, and in 2002 moved to it’s own teaching space. Over 25 years ago volunteers discovered a need and filled it, and this spirit lives on.
