DOULA REGISTRY
What is a Doula?
The word "Doula" is a Greek word that has come to refer to "a woman experienced in childbirth who provides continous physical, emotional and informational support to the mother before, during and just after childbirth." (Klaus, Kennell and Klaus, Mothering the Mother)

How does one find a Doula?
Childbirth Kingston has established a Doula Registry, as a service to our community, to assist expectant women/couples in selecting a Doula. Doulas have varying levels of training, experience and skills. It is the sole responsibility of the client to interview and screen their prospective Doula. It is also recommended that clients attend prenatal classes or arrange for private prenatal education from a childbirth educator. It is the goal of all Doulas to help ensure the most positive birth experience possible, to offer a perspective and to help protect this memory for years to come.
Parents should start by thinking about what they are looking for in a Doula.
- What are your own philosophies and thoughts on childbirth?
- What do you expect from a Doula?
- What would you see as her role within your birth experience?

Fees
Each Doula will have her own fee schedule. Most doulas fee structure works on a sliding scale. Parents should keep in mind that being a Doula involves being on call for up to a month and may involve loss of wages, childcare, parking and other expenses.
